I can predict the future… No really – I can!

My prediction: Thursday December 24th, approximately 1:00 PM – in your office. It will go something like this: A few of the sales team are hovering around the fax machine; fingers crossed, ever hopeful for those last minute orders. Tapping their fingers and getting impatient – not because the order may slip into next quarter if it doesn’t arrive, but that time is ticking away and they still haven’t picked up a gift for their significant other (incidentally, the other half of the sales-team is no-where to be seen; they had a round, err, meeting at the golf club as they already made their quotas in November – curse them!)… More

Reflecting on Nashville - in a Tennessee Whiskey kind of way

Those of you who follow such things will know that Avaya recently held its annual Sales Conference at the epicentre of country music; Nashville, Tennessee. As I was travelling from Australia – a journey that took about a day in the air no less, I thought it wise to arrive early and do my best to get into the time-zone. Perhaps catch up on a bit of sleep the following day of my arrival so I would be at my freshest and keenest as I sat through the key-note addresses of Messrs Kennedy and Abbott – not to mention the insights from the other leaders of this great company…More

On the Road with IP Office Release 5 – the chronicles of a Power User

It’s not often I accept a sporting failure by my national team as a positive experience. However on the eve of the New Zealand leg of the Release 5 launch of Avaya IP Office, a loss to the mighty All Blacks in yesterday’s Bledisloe Cup match (that would be rugby for the uninitiated) certainly ensures I will be greeted warmly (if not smugly) by my South Pacific friends.More

How Small Businesses can Empower Their Teleworkers

When an employee, either on a permanent or frequent basis, works remotely from the same location , we call this location a virtual office and the employee a teleworker or telecommuter. For instance, if during peak season some employees have to work on week-end from home or if during a long medical recovery a person cannot drive to the office they effectively can be considered to be teleworkers. Obviously certain professions are more prone to teleworking than others with the best illustrations being telemarketers, central reservation call centers or order takers.More

Being knowledgeable on communications solutions is a competitive advantage for SMEs

A recent survey we conducted happens to confirm my last blog introduction statement “While Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are affected by the recession, most of them keep investing in their business and on the top of their investment list is IT”. In this challenging economical situation, SMEs can only afford to spend on business critical assets and for 75% of the small businesses surveyed, that includes their communications system. Unlike larger companies which had more resources and purchased extra capacity on communications system in preparation for future growth, small businesses were more cautious and kept a close eye on...More

Even in recession, SMEs still invest in their business and… in IT

While Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are affected by the recession, most of them keep investing in their business and on the top of their investment list is IT. At the IDC Direction 09 in March, Ray Boggs and Merle Sandler shared the figure below which highlights that while the SMB IT spending is decreasing it is on average less impacted than the total corporate IT spending.

This is confirmed by a recent survey from Compass Intelligence published in eWeek stating that “majority of small-business IT buyers have remained positive about their IT spending […], with 42 percent of those surveyed […] expecting to keep their ICT (information and communications technology) spending unchanged in 2009.”More

Are small businesses early adopters?

On Tuesday, during his keynote at Voicecon and as part of the Avaya Aura announcement, Avaya CEO Kevin Kennedy commented that the Time for Innovation was now explaining that Innovation was often given birth during challenging economic times and actually helped economies recover. Being the lead for our marketing activities in the Small and Medium Businesses (SMB) space, I could not help but wonder what would trigger small businesses to embrace innovation in recession times. Are small businesses early adopters? Small businesses are value oriented customers with little time to spend learning about non-business critical IT tools, and even less...More
